The Brave
From Anthem: The Musical

“The Brave” is a musical ballad inspired by the true story of a deployed soldier who, after emailing with his wife in real-time, was suddenly killed while on tour in Iraq. One moment, everything was fine — and then suddenly, nothing would ever be the same. This is the journey of one widow and her family.

Purpose
We agree that the sacrifices of military men and women need to be honored and appreciated. We feel that with world-class talents and the additional wide-reach fanbase, “The Brave” could greatly benefit veterans and their families — both emotionally, and financially. We believe in the power of this music to inspire catharsis in those who have served and gratitude for them in the hearts of those who hear it. Beyond that, we plan to donate a portion of the proceeds from the song to the well-respected Disabled American Veterans Charitable Service Trust, to help further its mission of “empowering veterans to lead high-quality lives with respect and dignity.” We want to help give back to our country’s heroes, and are honored to invite you to help us do so by recording “The Brave.” If you would be willing to consider working together, we would be absolutely thrilled to have you join us.
To familiarize yourself with the music, we are including a demo-recording and copy of the lyrics below.
LYRICS

GENTLE RAIN; ISN'T THAT ALWAYS THE WAY
ON A DAY LIKE TODAY?
PEOPLE WEAR BLACK,
THEY HAND ME A FLAG,
AND IN SO MANY WORDS, THEY ALL SAY:
“HE WAS COURAGEOUS, NOBLE, AND STRONG.
TAKEN SO YOUNG: HOW SAD AND HOW WRONG.
HE WAS THE HERO WE COULDN'T SAVE.
HE WAS A SOLDIER, NOW HE'S A MARTYR:
ONE OF THE BRAVE.”
DISTANT PLANE: TAKING YOU OVER THE SEA,
OFF TO SAVE AND SET FREE.
AND THOUGH I KNEW YOU MIGHT NEVER RETURN,
I BELIEVED YOU WOULD COME HOME TO ME.
HERE I AM SMILING THROUGH SORROW SO DEEP.
ABLE TO LAUGH, THOUGH UNABLE TO SLEEP.
AND I STAND PROUDLY HERE AT YOUR GRAVE.
I WAS YOUR WOMAN NOW I'M YOUR WIDOW:
NOW I'M THE BRAVE.
WEEKS PASS AND MONTHS PASS, AND NEVER A TEAR.
LIKE YOU FOUGHT ABROAD, SO I'M FIGHTING HERE.
THEN I READ A STORY WITH TYLER AND MADDIE.
THEY SAY, “DO THE VOICE!” I SAY, “GO AND ASK DADDY.”
THEIR FACES DROP, I DROP THE BOOK.
I RUN FROM THE ROOM, CAN'T TAKE THEIR LOOK.
AND I CRY AND I CRY AND I CRY
BECAUSE I KNOW THEY ARE THE BRAVE;
THEY DIDN'T CHOOSE A MOTHER WHO'D LOSE IT,
A FATHER THEY'D LOSE.
WE CAN'T PROTECT THEM,
HOWEVER WE TRY.
WE ARE JUST HUMAN;
WE HURT AND WE DIE.
THEY SHARE OUR HEARTACHE, KNOW WHAT YOU GAVE.
THEY ARE THE CHILDREN OF SOLDIERS AND WIDOWS.
THEY ARE THE BRAVE.
